✨ Eyebrow Threading FAQ
Brow Curious? We’ve Got the Thread on It.
1️⃣ What is eyebrow threading and how does it work?
Eyebrow threading is an ancient hair-removal art (originating in South Asia) that uses a thin cotton thread to remove unwanted hairs in a precise, gentle line. Our Brow Lab artists twist and glide the 100% organic cotton thread along your skin, lifting hairs out from the follicle without any wax or chemicals. This means we can sculpt your brows with incredible accuracy, even those tiny, hard-to-pluck hairs to create a clean shape that flatters your face. It’s a quick process (usually just a few minutes per brow), and results are chef’s kiss perfectly shaped brows that can last for weeks. Plus, threading is totally natural, and our brow specialists are threading experts, so you’re in good hands for brows that slay.
2️⃣ Does eyebrow threading hurt, and how do you make it comfortable?
Threading is gentle, but you will feel a little pinch as the hairs are lifted out, like tiny, quick tugs. The good news: the Brow Lab team has a comfort-first approach, and we work gently and talk you through it to keep you at ease. Many people find threading less painful than waxing because we’re not ripping off any skin, just removing hair. If you’re nervous or have a low pain tolerance, let us know. We can take it slow, have you stretch the skin, or apply a soothing aloe gel right after. Any slight redness usually fades within minutes, and you’re left with flawlessly shaped brows (totally worth the tiny pinch!). We promise to keep you and your brows comfortable throughout the process. ✨
3️⃣ How long do eyebrow threading results last, and how often should I get it done?
You can expect your threaded brows to stay on point for around 2 to 4 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows back. Most clients find that their brows look clean and sharp for at least a couple of weeks. After that, hair will gradually start to regrow (usually finer and sparser over time). We recommend a touch-up every 3–4 weeks to maintain that crisp shape or whenever you notice your brow shape losing its crispness. The great thing is, with regular threading, your hair can grow in softer and more evenly. But it’s totally up to you: some folks come in the moment they see a stray hair, and others wait a bit longer. Either way, we’ll be here to keep your brows in shape whenever you’re ready for your next brow threading in Somerville appointment.
4️⃣ Is threading safe for my skin, even if it’s sensitive?
Absolutely! Eyebrow threading is one of the most skin-friendly hair removal methods. It doesn’t involve any harsh chemicals, waxes, or heat, just a pure cotton thread doing its magic. That means there’s minimal risk of irritation or breakouts, even if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin. In fact, threading only targets the hairs and won’t tug at your skin, so most people experience less redness and swelling compared to waxing. At The Brow Lab, we also ensure top-notch hygiene (fresh thread for every client, clean hands, etc.), and we use organic, natural products (such as organic rose water or aloe) to pamper your skin post-threading. If you have extremely sensitive skin or any specific condition, just let us know. We’ll tailor the session to keep you comfy. Overall, threading is a gentle, safe option for maintaining brow beauty without compromising your skin’s health.
5️⃣ How do I care for my brows after threading?
After threading, your brow area is clean and hair-free, and we want to keep your skin happy. We usually apply a calming gel (like aloe or rose water) right after to soothe any redness. Here are a few aftercare tips to keep your skin calm and your brows on fleek:
-
Hands off: Avoid touching or rubbing the threaded area for a few hours to prevent bacteria from irritating the open follicles.
-
Skip the makeup: Try not to apply brow makeup or heavy creams on the area for the rest of the day. Your pores are open, so give them a breather to avoid any pimples.
-
Cool it: If you feel any lingering warmth or see redness, you can gently apply a cold compress or some pure aloe vera at home to calm the skin.
-
Avoid heat & sweat: For 24 hours, avoid super-hot showers, saunas, or intense workouts that make you sweat heavily. Excess heat and sweat can irritate freshly threaded skin.
-
Sunscreen: If you’re heading out in the sun, dab a little sunscreen on your brows (after a few hours post-thread) because freshly exfoliated skin can be a bit more sensitive to the sun.
Following these tips will help you dodge any post-threading bumps or irritation. Most people have no issues at all, just clean, gorgeous brows. If you ever do notice tiny bumps, don’t worry; they usually disappear quickly. And of course, if you have any questions after your appointment, The Brow Lab is here to help keep your skin and brows healthy.
6️⃣ Can everyone get their brows threaded at The Brow Lab (guys, gals, any gender or age)?
Yes, yes, and yes! We pride ourselves on being an inclusive salon. All genders, identities, and ages are welcome to get their brows in shape with us. Brow care isn’t just for one type of person; brows are universal. We have clients across the gender spectrum (women, men, non-binary pals) and from teens to seniors. Our threading approach is totally customized, so if you’re a guy or someone who prefers a natural look, we’ll clean up stray hairs and define your brows without making them overly sculpted, unless you want a bold shape, of course! If you’re younger or a first-timer, we’ll walk you through it and make sure you’re comfortable every step of the way. The bottom line: everyone deserves great brows in a judgment-free zone. At The Brow Lab Somerville, you’ll be pampered without judgment and leave with brows that make you feel confident, no matter who you are. 🌈
7️⃣ Threading vs. waxing – what’s the difference, and which is better for brows?
Both threading and waxing can give you clean brows, but there are some key differences. Threading uses a cotton thread to precisely remove hairs in a line, whereas waxing uses hot wax to rip out a whole patch of hairs (and dead skin) at once. Threading lets us target even the tiniest hairs for a super-defined shape, and it doesn’t involve any chemicals or heat that could irritate your skin. That makes threading great for people with sensitive skin or those using skin treatments (no risk of ripping delicate skin). Waxing can sometimes cause redness or even burns if the wax is too hot – yikes. Pain-wise, threading feels like quick little plucks; waxing is one swift pull. Some prefer one over the other, but many say threading is gentler since we’re not pulling your skin, just hairs. At The Brow Lab, we specialize in threading because it’s precise and skin-friendly (and our South Asian brow artists have it down to an art form). Ultimately, “better” comes down to your skin and preference, but if you ask us, we’ll likely suggest brow threading for the best, most tailored results.

✨ Brow Tinting FAQ
Tint Talk? Let’s Break It Down for You 🖤
1️⃣ What is brow tinting and how does it work?
Brow tinting is basically a semi-permanent coloring service for your eyebrows. Think of it like a custom dye job for your brow hairs. At The Brow Lab, we use high-quality, gentle brow tints to add more color and definition to your brows. During the service, our brow artist will prep your brows and mix up a tint shade that flatters your hair color and skin tone (we can go darker for a bold look or just a touch deeper for a subtle vibe). Then we apply the tint to your brows for a few minutes so it can work its magic. The tint grasps onto all those fine, light-colored brow hairs you didn’t even know you had, making your brows look instantly fuller and more defined once we wipe it off. The whole process is quick and totally non-invasive (no needles, nothing scary). Result: your existing brows get a boost of color, so they frame your face better, often giving a “just filled-in” makeup look without any makeup. It’s one of the easiest ways to level up your brow game with zero effort in the mornings.
2️⃣ How long does an eyebrow tint last?
Get ready for low-maintenance brow vibes, because a professional tint can last up to about four weeks on your brow hairs. That means for roughly a month, you’ll wake up with your brows looking on-point without needing to touch a brow pencil. The exact duration can vary: if your hair grows or sheds quickly, you might see the color fading around the 3-week mark, whereas some lucky folks ride the full 4 weeks before needing a refresh. The tint color will gradually soften over time, so you won’t suddenly lose all the color at once. Your brows will just slowly return to their natural shade as hairs cycle out. To keep the color fresh, most clients come in for a tint touch-up every month or so. A few tips: avoiding harsh face scrubs or peels around the brow area will help the tint last longer (since exfoliation can strip color). And if you have very oily skin or use a lot of oil-based products on your face, the tint might fade a bit faster. But generally, you’re looking at several weeks of wake-up-and-go brow perfection from one tint session.
3️⃣ Is brow tinting safe? Will it irritate my skin or eyes?
When done by professionals (hi, that’s us 🙋♀️), brow tinting is very safe. We use gentle, high-quality tint formulas specifically made for the face, so they’re much milder than regular hair dyes. The process is pretty easy on the skin: we carefully apply the tint only to the brow hairs, making sure it doesn’t drip or get into your eyes. Our tints are eye-area safe, and we’re extra cautious. You’ll usually have your eyes closed or relaxed during the few minutes of application. It’s rare to have any reaction; in fact, our formulas are safe for sensitive skin, and we choose products that are ammonia-free and often vegetable-based or natural wherever possible. You also won’t feel any burning or discomfort, at most, just a slight tingling if you have super sensitive skin, but even that is uncommon. If you have a history of allergies to hair dyes or products, let us know, and we can always do a patch test beforehand to be 100% sure. After the tint, the skin under your brows might look slightly darker right after treatment (where a bit of tint might stain the skin), but that washes off within a day. We’ll wipe your brows clean, and you’re good to go, no irritation, just boldly beautiful brows. Your safety is our priority, and we’ve got you (and your skin) covered!
4️⃣ Will my brows look too dark or unnatural after tinting?
No worries, you’re in control of your brow look. Our goal is to make your brows look effortlessly enhanced, not cartoonish. Before we start, we’ll chat about how bold you want to go. If you’re nervous about sharpie brows, we’ll choose a subtle tint shade and timing so your brows only go a shade or two darker. The result will be softly defined brows that look totally natural. If you do want a dramatic, sharp Insta-brow, we can do that too, but nothing happens without your OK. Keep in mind that right after we tint, the color can look a tad deeper for the first day (as the dye might temporarily stain some skin in your brow area). This actually helps fill in sparse spots, but if it feels too bold, don’t panic: after you wash your face once, that slight skin stain will lighten, and you’ll see the true result. We custom-blend every color, so your brows will complement your hair color and skin tone; there’s no one-size-fits-all here. Our Brow Lab techs are basically brow matchmakers, making sure your tint level and shade match your vibe. In the end, you’ll have fuller-looking brows that wow without looking fake. We got you! 🙌
5️⃣ How should I care for my tinted brows to make the color last?
Tinted brows are low maintenance, but a little care will keep them looking fresh longer. Here are some easy aftercare tips for your brow tint:
-
Keep them dry for 24 hours: Avoid getting your brows wet for 24 hours after your appointment. That means no steamy showers, swimming, or heavy workouts that cause you to sweat on the first day. Water can weaken the tint before it sets.
-
Skip oil-based products: For the first few days, avoid using oily cleansers, makeup removers, or heavy creams on your brow area. Oils can strip away the tint faster. Use a gentle, water-based facial cleanser and just be careful around your brows.
-
Hands off: Resist the urge to rub or overly touch your tinted brows. Constant rubbing or scrubbing can fade the color sooner. When washing your face, gently cleanse the area around your brows without scrubbing.
-
Sun & chlorine caution: Too much sun exposure or chlorinated pool water can fade the tint more quickly. If you’re sunbathing, put a little sunscreen on your brows (once that first 24 hours has passed) or wear a hat. And if you go swimming, know chlorine might shorten your tint’s life; it’s not a deal-breaker, but something to be aware of.
-
Brow love: After the first day, you can groom your brows daily with a clean spoolie brush to keep hairs in place. Some people like to use a dab of brow conditioner or castor oil after a couple of days to keep the hairs healthy (use it sparingly so you don’t add too much oil).
With these tips, your brow tinting in Somerville will stay looking bold and beautiful for as long as possible. And when you notice the color fading, you’ll know it’s time to visit your fav Brow Lab artist for a refresh! 💕
6️⃣ Who is brow tinting for? Can guys or seniors or people with light brows do it?
Brow tinting is for literally anyone who wants to give their brows a little extra oomph! 🌟 There’s no gender or age limit. Brows are universal! We have all kinds of clients who enjoy a tint: women wanting to save time on their makeup routine, men looking to subtly define or cover some gray in their brows, blondes/redheads whose brows are super fair and want them to stand out more, and even seniors who miss the fuller brows they had when younger. Our space is totally inclusive and judgment-free, so guys, if you’re worried about coming in for a “beauty” service, don’t be! We make sure everyone feels welcome and comfortable. Brow tinting is simply a grooming step, like a haircut, and it can be as subtle or as bold as you want. If you have very sparse brows, tinting can make the most of the hairs you do have, and if you have thick brows, tinting can emphasize their shape. Basically, if you have brows, tinting might be your new BFF. 😄 And if you’re not sure, come talk to us. We’ll give you honest advice on whether we think you’ll love it (or if another service, like henna, might suit you better). It’s all about achieving your brow goals for everyone.
Brow Henna
Nature Made It. We Perfected It.
For those seeking a more natural alternative, brow henna in Somerville is the ultimate plant-based brow upgrade. Brow Lab uses 100% organic henna to provide your brows with rich, long-lasting color that truly lasts. We’re talking up to 6 weeks on your brow hairs! Unlike regular tints, henna stains the skin underneath your brows too, so even sparse areas get filled in (think of it as a temporary tattoo for your brows that fades in 1-2 weeks). It’s the perfect choice if you want an organic, chemical-free way to keep your brows looking bold and defined between appointments. And because it’s all-natural, henna is gentle on sensitive skin while still delivering significant color payoff and shape.

✨ Brow Henna FAQ
Henna Curious? We’re Spilling the Shade 🍃
1️⃣ What is brow henna and how does it work?
Brow henna is a natural, plant-based brow tinting service that not only colors your brow hairs but also leaves a soft stain on the skin beneath, creating a fuller, more defined brow look. It’s kind of like the all-natural cousin to regular brow tint. At The Brow Lab, we use 100% organic henna specially formulated for eyebrows (don’t worry, it’s not the bright red-orange henna you might be picturing, we have beautiful browns!). Here’s how it works: we’ll cleanse your brows and apply the henna paste to the brow area in the shape we’re aiming for. The henna dye comes from the Lawsonia plant, so it’s chock full of natural pigments. We let the paste sit on your brows for a bit to soak in the color (usually longer than a standard tint, around 10-15 minutes, so the henna has time to stain the skin). Once it’s done developing, we gently wipe it off to reveal bold, defined brows. The henna tints the brow hairs (just like regular tint) and leaves a subtle tattoo-like shade on your skin where your brows are, filling in any sparse areas. This skin tint makes your brows look super filled-in. It’s like you used brow powder or pomade, but it’s semi-permanent! The process is entirely organic and chemical-free, making it an excellent choice for people seeking natural beauty options. In short, brow henna is a fantastic way to get thicker, shapely brows using Mother Nature’s ingredients, and it’s perfect if you want a longer-lasting result than regular tinting.
2️⃣ How long do brow henna results last?
Brow henna is known for its longer-lasting results. You’ll get two levels of longevity: one for your skin and one for your brow hairs. On your brow hairs, the henna color can last up to 6 weeks; yep, about a month and a half of tinted hair! This is longer than typical chemical tints, because henna really sticks to the hair shaft. On the skin underneath, the henna stain typically lasts 1 to 2 weeks. The skin tint is strongest in the first week (so enjoy that extra filled-in look while it’s there!), and then it will gradually fade as your skin naturally exfoliates. How long the skin stain lasts can depend on your skin type and aftercare: for some, it might start to lighten after just a week, especially if you have oily skin or you’re heavy-handed with your exfoliators; for others with drier skin and a gentle routine, it could linger closer to two weeks. To make the most of your brow henna in Somerville, you’ll want to follow our aftercare tips (coming up next) to extend the life of that gorgeous skin stain. The great thing is, even once the skin tint fades, your brow hairs will still be colored, so your brows remain more defined than usual. Most henna fans come for a refresh around the 4-6 week mark. That keeps the hair color on point and reapplies the skin tint for that freshly done look. In summary, henna gives you a solid few weeks of wow brows with minimal upkeep—one of the longest-lasting brow treatments short of permanent makeup.
3️⃣ Is brow henna natural and safe for sensitive skin?
Yes! Brow henna is about as natural as it gets, and it’s generally very safe, even for sensitive skin. Our henna is derived from the henna plant (Lawsonia inermis). We use a 100% organic henna formula without ammonia or peroxide. That means you’re not putting any harsh chemicals on your skin, a big win for sensitive folks or anyone trying to avoid traditional dyes. In fact, henna has been used for body art on skin for centuries, so it’s a trusted ingredient. Most people find henna super gentle: it sits on the surface of your skin and stains it, rather than causing any chemical reaction in the hair or skin. If you’ve had issues with regular hair dye or brow tints, henna could be a great alternative, as it’s all-natural and often better tolerated. That said, “natural” doesn’t guarantee zero allergic reactions; a minimal number of people can be allergic to plant-based substances, too (for example, if you have a known henna or essential oil allergy). We rarely see any issues, but if you’re an allergy-prone person or have super-reactive skin, we can absolutely do a patch test before doing your brows fully. Just let us know! Safety first, always. Also, because henna is a stain, there’s no risk of it getting in your eyes or anything. It’s thick and paste-like, not runny. We’re careful in our application and let it dry before removal, so the process is tidy and safe. In short, brow henna is a safe, gentle option for most people, and it’s one of the reasons clients love it as a more eco-chicpath to bold brows.
4️⃣ What kind of results can I expect with brow henna (will it look different from a regular tint)?
Brow henna gives gorgeous, defined results. A bit more pronounced than a regular tint, especially in the first week. Right after your henna service, you’ll notice your brows look fuller and more filled-in, almost like you’ve expertly shaded them with brow powder or pencil. That’s the henna stain on your skin doing its thing, filling in sparse areas for a perfectly sculpted brow look. The color on both the hair and skin will be rich (don’t worry, we’ll choose a shade that suits you, from light brown to deep dark brown). Our henna isn’t one-size-fits-all; we have a range of shades, so your brows won’t turn orange or look too harsh. There’ll be a flattering tone that matches your vibe. In the first couple of days, your brows will appear very bold and defined due to the combination of hair tint + skin tint. If you love a “on fleek” Instagram brow, you’ll adore this! If you prefer a softer look, we can adjust how long we leave the henna on to make the skin stain lighter and less intense.
After about a week or so, the skin tint starts to fade, and you’re left with just the henna-tinted hairs. At that point, your brows look similar to a regular tint. Still nicely colored and shaped, just not as filled-in on the skin. Overall, expect sharp, photo-ready brows for the first several days (hello, low-maintenance mornings), then a gradual return to your normal skin tone under the brows with your brow hairs remaining colored for weeks. Many clients say henna gives them the look of having used brow pomade or microblading, but only temporarily, which is incredible for a special occasion or if you want to test out a bolder brow without a long-term commitment. And if you have very sparse brows, henna can be a game-changer since it gives the illusion of density where tinting alone might not. Basically, you’ll walk out with wow brows. We’re talking rich color and killer shape with dimension that lasts longer than standard tints.
5️⃣ Do I need to do any aftercare for brow henna?
To keep those henna brows looking flawless as long as possible, a little aftercare goes a long way. Here’s how to take care of your tinted beauties:
-
Keep it dry for 24 hours: Just like with regular tint, avoid getting your brows wet for the first day. No heavy sweating, swimming, or steamy saunas right after henna, as water can loosen the henna stain on your skin if introduced too soon.
-
Hands off and be gentle: Try not to touch, rub, or scrub your brows, especially during the first week while the skin stain is still hanging on. When washing your face, use a mild cleanser and gently cleanse the area around your brows without directly scrubbing the brows. Pat them dry softly with a towel instead of rubbing.
-
Skip the exfoliants: Avoid exfoliating scrubs, AHAs/BHAs, or harsh cleansers on your brow area while you have the henna on. These can cause the skin stain to fade faster. Also, if you use retinol or acne creams on your forehead, keep them above the brow line to avoid premature lightening of the henna stain.
-
No heavy oils: Oil-based makeup removers or facial oils can break down the henna on your skin. If you want the henna to last, stick to oil-free gel or cream cleansers around the brows. (On the flip side, if you ever do want to lighten the skin stain quicker, a little coconut oil on the brows will fade it, but we assume you want to keep it!).
-
Protect from sun and chlorine: Extended sun exposure can fade any hair color, including henna. It’s a good idea to wear a hat or use a bit of sunscreen on your brows if you’ll be in intense sun for extended periods (after that first day). And chlorine from swimming pools might shorten the life of the henna stain on your skin, so keep that in mind. A quick dip is fine, but everyday laps in the pool will probably mean the skin tint won’t last as long.
The great thing about henna is that once you’re past that initial 24 hours, it’s pretty fuss-free. Just treat your face kindly, and your brow henna in Somerville will keep serving looks. If you follow these tips, you’ll enjoy maximum longevity from your henna – and if you have any questions, we’re always here to guide you. Remember, with henna, you wake up each day with brows ready to go, so enjoy the no-muss, no-fuss mornings!
6️⃣ Brow Henna vs. Brow Tint – which should I choose?
Trying to decide between henna and regular tint? It really depends on your preferences and brow goals, but here’s a quick rundown of how they compare:
-
Ingredients: Brow tint is a traditional dye (we use high-quality, gentle formulas, but they are synthetic dyes), whereas brow henna is made from a plant-based dye (natural and chemical-free for those who prefer organic options).
-
Color effect: Both will darken your brow hairs, but henna does more. Tint sticks to the brow hairs and gives a softer enhancement; it won’t noticeably color your skin (maybe just a tiny shadow for a day, if anything). Henna, on the other hand, stains the skin under the brows for that fuller, filled-in look. This means henna can make sparse brows look denser, while tint mainly emphasizes the hairs you have. If you love a super natural, no-makeup look, tint might be sufficient. If you want a bit of that “makeup” effect or have gaps to fill, henna is awesome.
-
Longevity: Henna generally lasts longer. On hair, tint lasts about 4 weeks, while henna can last up to 6 weeks. The skin stain from henna gives you about 1-2 weeks of extra oomph that tint won’t. So if you’re looking to extend time between appointments, henna has the edge.
-
Shade range: Both offer a variety of shades. Henna generally only darkens or matches your natural brow color; it can’t lighten hair (since it’s a deposit-only dye). For darkening and filling, both are great, but henna gives a more intense result.
-
Sensitivity: If you have very sensitive skin or prefer all-natural products, henna might be better tolerated, as it’s organic and gentle. Our tint is gentle too, but henna is free from chemicals that some people might be sensitive to. We’ve had clients with dye allergies do well with henna.
-
Look and vibe: Tint is quick, subtle, and significant for a low-key enhancement; your brows will look naturally bolder, like your brows but better. Henna is more of a statement, especially in that first week with the skin stain. It looks like you’re wearing brow makeup (in a good way). It’s fantastic if you want a more polished brow or if you have areas that won’t grow hair because henna will fill those in. Some clients use henna as a test run for microblading, since it gives a similar, temporary-filled effect.
Still not sure? We’re happy to consult during your visit to The Brow Lab Somerville. Some clients even start with tint to see how they like the color boost, and later try henna for a more defined look. Either way, our brow experts will ensure you get fab results. Whether you go with a classic brow tint or henna, you’ll be sporting stunning brows that make your eyes pop; all while enjoying our inclusive, high-quality, comfort-first service. 💖
